DARPA has organized a race for fully automated vehicles across several hundred miles of the Mojave. This SFGate article highlights a few of the teams working on entries. I love projects where a couple of guys in their garage can compete with University teams and defense contractors. The whole thing reminds me of the University of Minnesota Intelligent Vehicles Laboratory work on the SmartPlow and other automated vehicles. This automation is the next step for the already existing adaptive cruise control, brake assist, and stability control systems on automobiles. I've participated personally in a study that another lab at the University: HumanFIRST conducted looking at future driver assistance systems in their simulator.
Just as long as I can still get a Miata that takes commands for throttle, brakes and steering from me and not the computer onboard I'll be happy.
